I think there’s a whole world of events up in St. Johns that I’m just not aware of because it’s so far away. Well, today I shall try to remedy that. You can go get your laugh on at this free monthly comedy show featuring Portland’s Funniest Person Nathan Brannon along with other Portland favorites.
This promises to be the grittiest, most down home writing you will ever hear in Portland. I’m not sure exactly what that means, but I know I want to find out! Portland’s Johnny No Bueno will host with features Dena Rash Guzman and Brian Tibbetts. There will also be an open mic of “the kind of literature that looks great with a black eye, that knows the sting of dry-wall in winter-cracked knuckles, that knows the difference between the smells of freshly sanitized stripper poles and black tar heroin.”
This sounds like it could be either really cool or super ridiculous. I guess just bring both your sophisticated critic and ironic judgment hats. It sounds like there’s going to be performances, installations, projections, DJs and “virtual immersions” around the theme of “augmented reality as integrated technology and interactive performance.” I mean here’s a sample of the description. I don’t know what it means, but keep Portland weird right?
Where as virtual reality conventionally conceived by technoindustrial processes is commoditized for future obsolescence in an economy of artifacts, the virtual states achieved by techne can also be a materialized dialogue between and artist and their symbio/physical environment.
FREE Dawson Park Pre-movie entertainment 6:30pm; movie at dusk
Now who says the original Willy Wonka movie isn’t creepy enough? I mean just look at those orange men with their broccoli hair and how they surround Gene Wilder with their white gloved hands. To be fair, it is Gene Wilder. You’d try to get on a hand on him if you were that close. Any case, we all know this movie. We all love it. Go watch it in the park!!
TriMet is about to up the price and take away the Free Zone. So today is your LAST chance to ever ride TriMet for free. I suggest you jump on the MAX or Streetcar and just ride it back and forth. Or at least ride it downtown once today. Say goodbye to an era of affordability.
If any of you are a fan of the Portland Poetry Slam, then you will love this anthology. All of your favorite poets are now combined into one amazing book. Our own poetry publishing collective Sparrow Ghost Collective (think Broetry) is releasing their 2nd anthology and they’re throwing a massive party tonight! There will be readings, music and hilarity! I highly suggest you buy an anthology! It’s only $15. They’re practically giving it away!!
Sometimes we need poetry to delve into topics that are too hard to discuss; to express those emotions we’re too passionate about to explain rationally. The conflict between Palestinians and Israelis is one these topics. The hope is that through poetry each side of this conflict will be able to have their voice heard. I know I want to hear what these poets have to say.
(Man, I love the music director’s hair) Every year the Oregon Symphony kicks off their new season with one great big FREE concert! So, bring your chairs and blankets and get ready for a night of epic music. And don’t miss the Portland Youth Philharmonic who will be playing Swan Lake as the Oregon Ballet Theatre performs. I suggest you get there early because it will be crowded!!
This picture still makes me so happy. Thank you internet. Thinternet. Any case, it’s Last Thursday and you know what that means: Portland’s biggest street party!! If you haven’t been, YOU NEED TO GO! If you have, you know how awesome it is. Be there!!
Man I just got a history lesson in drank! Not only did I find out that there is in fact a National Mai Tai today, but that people have been celebrating the wrong day for years, at least according to Tiki Central. So while people have been sucking down mai tais on June 30th, the official National Mai Tai day is today August 30th cause Victor J. Bergeron invented the mai tai in August of 1944. So come get your drink on and celebrate properly!
